Years ago I started my first business - a Chicago based record label/management company. I was fresh out of college armed only with a BA and unbridled optimism. I was not prepared for how much work it would be. Before college I was an All-State baseball player and worked out daily. Now, with the weight of a business on my shoulders, I started skipping the gym. I ate whatever was convenient. I didn't deal with my stress or protect my sleep. I failed to manage my mental or emotional state. This led to poor focus on my work. I struggled to make decisions through thick mind fog. I drowned in long work days. My health spiraled downward over the months of stress, fatigue, and deconditioning. Eventually, I couldn't produce quality work. I gained fat, lost muscle, and constantly felt terrible. The business went under and I moved back across the country to live with my parents. Not exactly a fairy tale. When I began personal training I made a commitment to the physical side of my health. I completed a minimum number of workouts each week and ate very healthy. However, I was working insane hours. I trained clients 12 hours per day, 6 days per week. I kept this insane pace far too long. The diet and exercise definitely helped, but I failed to manage my stress and rest. Due to the mounting stress and fatigue I was ill constantly.
